Sony Releases Major Free Update Enhancing PS5 Pro Graphics with PSSR 2.0

Sony has launched a significant system update for the PlayStation 5 Pro, activating the upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) 2.0 technology across multiple games. This free update markedly improves image sharpness, detail clarity, and overall graphical stability, delivering enhanced visual performance without additional cost to users.
The update supports a growing list of titles including Silent Hill 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Control, Alan Wake 2, and Resident Evil Requiem, among others. Early user feedback and Digital Foundry's testing highlight substantial improvements in image quality, with sharper edges, clearer fine details like hair and foliage, reduced flickering, and more stable frame rendering.
PSSR 2.0 represents a collaborative effort between Sony and AMD under the Project Amethyst initiative. It builds upon AMD's FSR4 technology while incorporating Sony's proprietary enhancements, resulting in more precise pixel-by-pixel upscaling and better temporal stability. This allows developers greater flexibility to optimize the balance between performance and visual fidelity on the PS5 Pro.
Notably, Silent Hill f, previously criticized for poor PSSR implementation, now benefits from a complete visual overhaul with stable ray-traced global illumination and consistent texture quality. Other games like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Monster Hunter Wilds also show marked visual gains without compromising performance, as the updated PSSR maintains similar frame-time costs to the original version.
Sony emphasizes that the update delivers:
- Improved image stability and reduced artifacts
- Enhanced rendering of small details such as grass, shadows, and particle effects
- More consistent performance across Fidelity and Performance modes
- Reduced ghosting and flickering for smoother motion
This update underscores the ongoing collaboration between Sony and AMD to maximize PS5 Pro's graphical capabilities, offering players a sharper and more immersive gaming experience at no extra charge.
