Sony Unveils PS5 Pro’s Enhanced Graphics Power with Resident Evil: Requiem

Sony has officially confirmed that Resident Evil: Requiem is the first game to utilize the next-generation PlayStation 5’s Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) 2.0 technology. This upscaling method, integral to the PS5 Pro, delivers a marked improvement in graphical fidelity, showcased in a commercial title for the first time.
The new PSSR 2.0 system is based on AMD’s FSR4 technology and represents a shift towards advanced machine learning-based upscaling on consoles. Analysts, including those from Digital Foundry, have praised the PS5 Pro version of Resident Evil: Requiem as the best iteration, noting significant enhancements in ray tracing, native 4K resolution, and stable 60 frames per second performance.
Digital Foundry highlights that in ray tracing mode, the game is rendered from a base resolution slightly above 1080p and then upscaled to 4K. This results in sharp details such as clothing seams and small environmental text appearing convincingly on 4K displays, with improved edge clarity and an authentic high-resolution experience.
While some noise has been reported in certain ray tracing scenes, investigations attribute this to Capcom’s noise reduction rather than PSSR itself. Similar effects appear in PC implementations of DLSS 4.5 and FSR4, according to graphics experts.
Sony is also preparing to introduce a system-level setting called “Enhance PSSR Image Quality,” which may upgrade older games’ visuals without requiring individual developer updates. Additionally, native support in upcoming titles is expected to further boost image quality. This advancement positions the PS5 Pro as a competitive platform against PC upscaling solutions and may provide a technological edge in the console market, especially as rumors suggest the PlayStation 6 launch has been delayed to 2028 or 2029.
