Sony and AMD Enhance PS5 Pro Graphics with Major Free Upgrade
Article Content
Much like the significant hardware upgrades seen in previous console generations, the PlayStation 5 Pro is now delivering on its promise with a substantial and free software enhancement. Sony and AMD have collaborated to improve the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology, addressing earlier criticisms and providing gamers with sharper visuals and more stable performance.
Initially launched with promises of a stronger GPU, enhanced ray tracing, and advanced AI upscaling via PSSR, the PS5 Pro's first implementation fell short, offering lower-than-expected resolutions and sometimes underperforming compared to AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR2). However, as of 2026, the upgraded PSSR technology has been tested across multiple titles, showing marked improvements in image quality and performance.
The updated PSSR, developed under the Project Amethyst partnership, integrates AMD's FSR4 technology with Sony's proprietary enhancements. This synergy benefits both companies and gamers by delivering:
- Improved image stability and clearer rendering of fine details such as grass, hair, and shadows
- More precise upscaling from lower resolutions
- Reduced flickering and ghosting effects
- Consistent frame rates in both Fidelity and Performance modes
- Enhanced temporal stability with less noise between frames
- Faster adaptation to scene changes for smoother motion
Several major games now support the upgraded PSSR, including Silent Hill 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Control, Alan Wake 2, and Resident Evil Requiem. Notably, Silent Hill f, previously criticized for poor PSSR implementation causing unstable visuals, now exhibits sharp, consistent vegetation and improved lighting effects thanks to the new update.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth also benefits from crisper edges and reduced aliasing, while Monster Hunter Wilds shows better anti-aliasing and more stable reflections without sacrificing performance. Digital Foundry's testing confirms that these enhancements come without additional performance costs, delivering higher visual fidelity at stable frame rates—fulfilling a key expectation of PS5 Pro owners.
