Streaming service costs continue to climb as YouTube Premium and YouTube Music announce their first price increases in three years. The company confirmed on Wednesday that the individual plan will rise from $13.99 to $15.99 per month starting May 10. The family plan, which covers up to five household members, will increase from $22.99 to $26.99 per month on the same date.
The changes follow similar adjustments by competitors in recent months. Netflix raised prices in January, while Spotify increased costs for its Premium tier in March. YouTube’s decision reflects broader industry trends as platforms adjust pricing to offset rising production and licensing expenses.
A Google spokesperson stated the update is part of routine pricing reviews to support ongoing service improvements and new features. Existing subscribers will receive email notifications about the change before the new rates take effect. Users can still access the current prices until May 9.
The price adjustments apply only to new and renewing subscribers. Current customers locked into annual plans at the old rates will not see changes until their subscriptions renew. YouTube has not announced adjustments to its student plan, which remains at $6.99 per month.
The move comes as YouTube expands its content library and invests in original programming. The platform now offers ad-free music streaming, background play, and offline downloads as standard features for Premium subscribers.
