Volvo owners with Android-based infotainment systems from model year 2020 or newer will start receiving a Google Gemini AI upgrade today. The update introduces a more advanced voice assistant that supports natural conversations, travel recommendations, message management, and hands-free control of vehicle functions.
The rollout begins in the United States and requires an active internet connection and a Google account set to English. Owners must also ensure their car’s infotainment system is updated to the latest software version before installation.
Google Gemini replaces the existing assistant in supported Volvo models, improving responsiveness and expanding language understanding. The update does not require a visit to a dealership, as the installation happens remotely over the air.
Volvo confirmed the feature is available for XC40, XC60, XC90, S60, and V60 models equipped with the Google-based infotainment system. The company stated that additional markets will receive the update later in 2026.
Drivers can activate the assistant by saying “Hey Google” or pressing the voice command button on the steering wheel. The system supports real-time traffic updates, weather briefings, and calendar synchronization when connected to a smartphone.
