Passengers on Norway’s Bergen Line and Vestfold Line face disrupted mobile and internet coverage in recently built railway tunnels. The issue stems from a long-running dispute between tunnel owners and telecom operators. The conflict has delayed the installation of necessary equipment, leaving travelers without reliable connectivity during their journeys.
The problem affects several new tunnels along the two rail routes. Travelers report frequent dropouts and weak signals, particularly in the Arna Tunnel on the Bergen Line and the Brevik Tunnel on the Vestfold Line. These tunnels, completed in recent years, were designed with provisions for mobile coverage, but disputes over installation costs and responsibilities have stalled progress.
Infrastructure owner Bane NOR states it has secured agreements with telecom providers to resolve the issue. The company expects full coverage within two years, pending final approvals. Meanwhile, passengers continue to experience inconsistent service, raising concerns about safety and convenience.
The dispute highlights tensions between rail infrastructure and telecom sectors. While new tunnels are built with modern connectivity in mind, unresolved commercial disagreements can delay essential upgrades. Travelers are advised to plan ahead, as signal loss may occur in affected sections of the routes.
