Tourism in Finnmark has grown rapidly in recent years. Instead of chasing mass tourism, local businesses chose a different path. The result is a profitable niche market worth millions.
In 2021, the company Idiotprosjekt began as a small project in Hammerfest. Its founders initially aimed for broad appeal but soon realized the local market had different needs. By focusing on high-end experiences, they transformed a struggling startup into a million-krone business within three years.
The shift came after surveys showed most visitors were willing to pay for quality over quantity. Idiotprosjekt pivoted to luxury fishing trips, guided Arctic adventures, and exclusive cultural tours. Revenues rose from 2 million to 12 million kroner between 2022 and 2024.
Local officials now cite the company as a model for regional growth. "We saw that high-end tourism creates steady jobs and higher spending," said a spokesperson for Finnmark County Council. Other businesses followed, adding premium services to their offerings.
The trend contrasts with earlier attempts to attract mass tourism, which often led to seasonal instability. Finnmark’s tourism sector now reports record bookings, with high-end clients booking a year in advance.
