Telenor’s security systems stopped 666 million unsafe websites and cybercrime attempts between January and March 2024. The company said malware now drives the majority of these blocks, reflecting a growing threat from malicious online activity.
The surge in blocked pages follows a pattern seen in late 2023, when Telenor reported nearly 2 billion detections in a single quarter. Cybersecurity teams at the operator now classify most threats as malware or phishing sites designed to steal user data. The company did not specify how many of the attempts originated within Norway.
Telenor’s figures come as regulators in Europe push stricter rules on digital security. The European Union’s Digital Services Act requires platforms to remove illegal content faster, including sites linked to fraud or identity theft. Telenor’s data suggests many blocked pages violate these rules, even if hosted abroad.
The operator did not detail how many users were exposed to these threats before blocks occurred. It also declined to say whether any incidents led to financial losses or data breaches. Telenor’s security chief called the first quarter results a reminder of the scale of online risks facing consumers and businesses alike.
