Instead of the traditional trench excavation, Statnett is set to construct an 11-kilometer power tunnel connecting Smestad and Bærum. This ambitious infrastructure project aims to enhance the region's electrical grid while minimizing surface disruption.
The project, managed by Statnett's project leader Hans Herlofsen, represents a significant investment with costs estimated at up to seven billion Norwegian kroner. The tunnel will serve as a critical conduit for electricity transmission, improving capacity and reliability between the two areas.
By opting for a tunnel rather than open trenching, Statnett expects to reduce environmental impact and limit disturbances to local communities. The tunnel will run underground, similar to the existing cable tunnel between Sogn and Ulven, where Herlofsen has prior experience.
Construction is planned to begin soon, with the goal of strengthening the infrastructure to meet growing energy demands in the Oslo region. This project underscores Statnett's commitment to modernizing Norway's power grid through innovative engineering solutions.
