Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced the closure of Bluepoint Games, the studio renowned for its critically acclaimed remakes, including the PlayStation 5 launch title Demon’s Souls. The decision, reported by Bloomberg, marks the end of a key player in PlayStation’s remaster and remake efforts.
Bluepoint Games was acquired by Sony in 2021 following years of collaboration. The Austin-based studio, founded in 2006, built a strong reputation as technical experts and contributed to several high-profile projects such as God of War Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, and Shadow of the Colossus remake. Their work on Demon’s Souls remains highly regarded among PlayStation fans.
Details about the fate of Bluepoint’s employees and ongoing projects remain unclear. Sony has not released official comments regarding the closure or the future of the studio’s unannounced original content, which was reportedly in development after the acquisition. Earlier, Sony confirmed the cancellation of a live-service game that Bluepoint was working on.
Bluepoint’s portfolio includes:
- Blast Factor (2006)
- God of War Collection (2009)
- The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection (2011)
- Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (2011)
- Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (2015)
- Shadow of the Colossus remake (2018)
- Demon’s Souls remake (2020)
- Support for God of War Ragnarök (2022)
The closure of Bluepoint Games represents a significant shift within PlayStation Studios, raising questions about Sony’s strategy for remakes and original content moving forward.
