SAS Announces Over 1,000 Flight Cancellations in April Amid Rising Fuel Costs

The aviation industry continues to face significant disruptions as SAS plans to cancel more than 1,000 flights in April, primarily due to soaring fuel prices. This follows a series of cancellations in March, with around 200 flights already affected.
This week alone, SAS has canceled 110 departures from Norwegian airports, citing the sharp increase in fuel costs as the main reason. Passengers impacted by these cancellations are entitled to refunds, rebooking options, or compensation of up to 600 euros per person, according to the Norwegian Consumer Council.
SAS CEO Anko van der Werff emphasized that the cancellations are directly linked to fuel price hikes and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, dismissing other potential causes. Despite the scale of cancellations, he noted that the company operates approximately 800 flights daily, framing the reduction as a necessary but measured response to current challenges.
According to Avinor, about 20 additional SAS flights were canceled on Wednesday. The airline aims to minimize disruption but expects further cancellations following the Easter period. This ongoing adjustment reflects broader pressures on the airline industry as it navigates volatile operating costs.
