Roblox has introduced two new account types designed to restrict chat and game access based on user age. The move aims to improve safety for younger players on the platform. Users aged five to nine will automatically receive a Roblox Kids account. Those aged nine to 15 will get a Roblox Select account. The system replaces the previous single account model for all users under 16.
The company says the change follows feedback from parents concerned about online interactions. Roblox Kids accounts limit chat functions and restrict access to certain games. Roblox Select accounts offer more freedom but still enforce stricter controls than the default Roblox Standard account available to users 16 and older.
Parents can adjust settings manually if they want different restrictions. The new accounts were announced on April 13 and will roll out gradually over the coming months. The company did not provide a specific date for full implementation.
The update comes as Roblox faces increasing scrutiny over child safety online. Last year it settled a lawsuit alleging it failed to protect minors from inappropriate content. The company has since increased moderation staff and invested in AI detection tools.
The new account types are part of Roblox’s broader effort to address regulatory and public concerns about children’s digital experiences.
