Washington — Starting this week, OpenAI offers free access to ChatGPT for Clinicians for licensed U.S. physicians, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists. The program covers verified professionals in clinical care, medical documentation, and research. No subscription fee applies to eligible participants.
The company confirmed the expansion on Tuesday. OpenAI states the tool will help reduce administrative workload for doctors and support evidence-based decisions. Clinicians can use the platform to summarize patient records, draft notes, and analyze medical literature. The service integrates with existing electronic health systems where possible.
OpenAI did not disclose user numbers but said thousands of applications arrived within days. Verification requires state medical licenses or equivalent credentials. The move follows earlier pilots in select hospitals and research centers.
Industry analysts note the shift aligns with growing demand for AI assistance in healthcare. Last year, the American Medical Association reported 60% of physicians faced burnout partly due to paperwork. OpenAI claims its chatbot can cut documentation time by up to 40% in some cases.
The free tier includes core features but excludes advanced analytics. OpenAI plans to add more specialties later this year. Existing ChatGPT Plus subscribers retain full access.
