Nvidia researchers have cut the time needed for real-time path tracing by up to three times. They achieved this with an improved version of the ReSTIR PT algorithm. The new method also reduces RAM usage, cuts flickering and handles light more efficiently. Image quality remains unchanged.
The work is still in the research phase. Yet it marks a clear step toward practical, fast path tracing for games. Faster rendering means developers can use more complex lighting effects without slowing down gameplay.
The team presented the findings at a graphics conference this month. Details include how the algorithm reuses light samples across frames. This cuts redundant calculations while keeping visuals sharp.
Current ray tracing in games relies on hybrid approaches. They mix rasterization with limited ray tracing. The new method could remove that compromise by making full ray tracing feasible in real time.
Nvidia has not announced when or if the technique will reach commercial products. But the research signals a shift in what real-time graphics can achieve.
