Norway and the United Kingdom have launched a joint naval operation to monitor and deter Russian submarine activity in the North Atlantic. Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram confirmed the mission on Tuesday, stating it serves both deterrence and defense purposes.
The operation involves surface vessels and aircraft from both nations. According to Gram, the goal is to ensure maritime security in Norwegian waters and the broader region. Russian submarine movements have increased near Norway’s coast in recent months, raising concerns among NATO allies.
Gram emphasized that the mission is not directed at any single country but aims to protect Norway’s sovereignty and support allied efforts. The operation follows a pattern of increased NATO presence in the Arctic, where Russia has expanded its military activities.
British and Norwegian forces have conducted similar patrols before. This mission, however, involves closer coordination and a broader scope. The defense minister did not disclose specific locations or timelines but noted that the operation is part of a long-term strategy.
The announcement comes as Russia has intensified its military exercises in the region. Norway has responded by strengthening its own naval capabilities and deepening cooperation with allies.
