A research team led by an Ohio State University professor has raised $40 million in seed funding to build artificial intelligence systems that mimic human learning. NeoCognition, a startup founded by Dr. Elena Vasquez, focuses on creating AI agents capable of mastering specialized domains without extensive prior programming.
The funding round was co-led by Lux Capital and Founders Fund, with participation from Google Ventures and NVIDIA’s venture arm. Company executives state the capital will accelerate development of core algorithms that enable AI to transfer knowledge across tasks, a key hurdle in current machine learning models.
Vasquez, a former OSU computer science professor, left academia in 2024 to lead NeoCognition full-time. The startup’s first commercial product targets industrial inspection, where AI agents analyze equipment wear in real time. Early clients include a major semiconductor manufacturer and a wind turbine operator, both reporting reduced downtime after deploying NeoCognition’s systems. The company plans to expand into healthcare diagnostics by 2025.
Industry analysts note the seed round reflects growing investor interest in AI that operates with limited data. NeoCognition competes with firms like DeepMind and Anthropic, but differentiates itself by prioritizing efficiency over sheer computational power.
