Microsoft has increased the capacity of its Sovereign Private Cloud to support thousands of nodes through Azure Local, enabling organizations to run artificial intelligence and data processing workloads with greater control and compliance. The expansion addresses demand from sectors such as government, healthcare and finance for cloud services that operate independently from public networks.
Azure Local allows organizations to deploy cloud infrastructure in isolated environments, disconnected from the internet when necessary. This meets strict regulatory requirements while providing the same tools and services available in Microsoft’s public cloud. Microsoft states the update ensures full control over data residency and access, which is critical for handling sensitive information.
The move follows growing adoption of sovereign cloud solutions by European institutions and U.S. federal agencies. These entities require cloud services that comply with local data protection laws without relying on external connectivity. Azure Local now supports larger deployments, making it suitable for large-scale AI training and real-time analytics.
Microsoft also highlights that the expansion maintains the same security protocols and operational features as its public cloud. Organizations can use familiar Azure services like Azure Machine Learning and Azure Kubernetes Service in private environments. The update includes improved hardware configurations to handle high-performance computing workloads efficiently.
