San Francisco, April 10 — Meta has rolled out its Muse Spark model this week, driving more users to download the company’s Meta AI app. Once users sign up, the app sends a notification to friends on Instagram informing them that the user has joined Meta AI.
The notification appears as a standard activity alert in the Instagram app. It reads: "[Your friend’s name] is now using Meta AI." The message is visible to followers or people the user interacts with on Instagram. Meta confirmed the feature in a blog post on Wednesday, stating it is part of efforts to integrate AI tools across its platforms.
Users who prefer privacy have raised concerns. Some say the notifications could reveal their AI use to contacts they did not intend to inform. One user in New York said the alert went to a colleague with whom he shares no personal connection. He described the situation as awkward after receiving a message asking why he started using Meta AI.
Meta’s integration of AI features across apps has accelerated since the launch of its AI assistant last year. The company now embeds AI tools in Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, aiming to make them central to daily use. The Instagram notification system is automatic for new Meta AI users and cannot be disabled in settings.
Experts note the notifications may affect adoption. A social media analyst in London said visible AI usage could deter privacy-conscious users from trying new AI apps. Meta did not respond to requests for comment on whether changes are planned.
