Mastodon has introduced a redesigned user profile interface aiming to make its decentralized social network more accessible to mainstream users seeking alternatives to platforms like X or Threads. The update focuses on enhancing user experience by streamlining profile navigation and providing clearer explanations of Mastodon's unique features.
Built on the ActivityPub protocol, Mastodon gained prominence following Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter (now X), which prompted some users to explore decentralized options. Unlike traditional social networks controlled by a single company, Mastodon operates across multiple servers, allowing users to switch if they disagree with a server’s moderation policies. However, this decentralized model can be complex for newcomers, who must select a server and navigate multiple timelines, contributing to a decline in monthly active users from around one million to approximately 800,000.
The latest profile redesign replaces the previous dual-view post system with a single "Activity" tab featuring a dropdown menu. This allows users to filter posts by toggling replies and boosts (Mastodon's equivalent of reposts). Hashtags now appear prominently at the top of profiles for easier content filtering. The pinned posts carousel has been removed in favor of displaying one featured pinned post, with an option to view all pinned posts via a button.
Additional improvements clarify Mastodon’s handle format, which includes both a username and server name, through an informational pop-up. Users gain more control over profile appearance, including options to hide media or featured tabs and to exclude replies from the media tab. Custom profile fields are now displayed side-by-side and can be edited on mobile devices, enhancing usability. Other visual tweaks reduce clutter by removing the "following you" badge and relocating the personal note to an overflow menu.
Profile management has been centralized within account settings, enabling users to edit featured hashtags, links, and other information in one place. Mastodon also moved link verification out of hidden settings to improve credibility features without relying on centralized authority or paid verification. Users can now crop and add alt text to profile images and cover photos. These changes are initially available on the mastodon.social server and other servers running the nightly build, with broader rollout planned in the upcoming Mastodon 4.6 update.
