A new national rail tunnel from Oslo S to Lysaker will significantly benefit passengers according to the Norwegian Railway Directorate. The proposal aims to reduce congestion and improve connections on the busy Gardermobanen line. The directorate’s recommendation follows years of planning and public consultation.
The proposed tunnel would run parallel to the existing infrastructure, creating additional capacity for both regional and long-distance trains. Current estimates indicate the project could cost between 20 and 25 billion Norwegian kroner. The directorate highlights that the tunnel would shorten travel times and increase frequency of services between Oslo and key destinations like Gardermoen airport and Drammen.
Traffic on the Gardermobanen line has grown steadily in recent years. The existing tracks are operating near capacity during peak hours. The new tunnel would provide much-needed relief by separating long-distance and regional traffic, reducing delays and improving reliability.
Local authorities and transport organizations have welcomed the proposal. Oslo’s city council has already indicated support for the project, emphasizing its role in reducing road traffic and promoting public transport. The Norwegian Railway Directorate will now submit the plan to the Ministry of Transport for further review.
The recommendation comes as part of a broader national strategy to modernize Norway’s rail network. The government has prioritized several major infrastructure projects in recent budgets, reflecting growing demand for efficient and sustainable transport solutions.
