Google plans to roll out AI Overviews in Gmail for business users by the end of 2026. The tool will scan threads across multiple emails to generate instant summaries of key information. Employees will see condensed versions of long email exchanges without opening each message individually.
The feature targets work accounts first, meaning personal Gmail users won’t get it immediately. Google says this prioritization reflects stronger demand from corporate clients for productivity tools. IT administrators will control whether the feature is enabled in their domains.
AI Overviews will extract details such as deadlines, action items, and key decisions from email chains. Google’s announcement follows similar AI summarization tools already used in products like Google Docs and Google Meet. The company has not disclosed whether the feature will be free for business customers or require additional licensing.
Privacy advocates have raised concerns about how scanning work emails might affect employee monitoring policies. Google states that summaries are generated locally and only shared with authorized users in the same organization. No external data will be used to train the AI models behind this feature.
