In 1995, Alicia Silverstone’s character in Clueless built a closet that turned wardrobe selection into an art form. Now, Google Photos has made that vision possible using artificial intelligence. The tech company announced on Tuesday that its AI image generator can recreate iconic outfits from the film and assemble them into a digital closet.
The feature uses Google’s Imagen 2 model, which was introduced in December 2025. Users can type prompts such as "Cher Horowitz’s yellow plaid suit" or " Dionne’s pink feather boa" to generate images of the outfits. Google says the tool is designed for creative expression, not commercial use. It avoids generating images of real people to prevent misuse.
This is not the first time AI has recreated fictional fashion. In 2023, a team at MIT used diffusion models to reconstruct costumes from The Great Gatsby for a museum exhibit. Google’s version, however, integrates directly into Google Photos, allowing users to save generated images alongside their real photos.
The company tested the feature with a small group in March 2026 before a wider release. Google did not disclose user numbers or engagement metrics. The tool is available in English and will expand to other languages later in 2026.
Some fashion historians have raised concerns about AI recreating copyrighted designs. Google states it has obtained licenses for the specific outfits featured in Clueless but did not detail the agreements.
