Databricks has introduced two new tools for data engineers. Genie Code and Lakeflow allow users to write production-ready code using natural language. The company announced the tools on May 20 during its Data + AI Summit in San Francisco.
Genie Code is a coding assistant integrated into Databricks’ platform. Engineers describe a data task in plain English, and the tool generates the required code. The output is production-ready, meaning it can be deployed without manual adjustments. Lakeflow is a workflow orchestrator that automates data pipelines. It schedules tasks, manages dependencies, and handles failures automatically.
The tools are part of Databricks’ push to simplify data engineering. Chief Product Officer Naveen Krishnamurthy said the goal is to reduce the time spent on repetitive coding. He added that engineers can now focus on higher-value work like designing architectures and optimizing queries.
Early users include data teams at Adobe and Comcast. Adobe’s senior director of data engineering, Priya Kapoor, said Genie Code cut a three-day ETL project to two hours. Comcast’s lead data engineer, Mark Reynolds, reported similar gains in pipeline setup time.
The tools are available now for Databricks customers on the Enterprise plan. General availability is expected by the end of June. Pricing details have not been disclosed.
