A coalition of Frp and KrF is pushing for faster nuclear power expansion after the government’s advisory report on nuclear energy was published. Tor Mikkel Wara, energy policy spokesperson for Frp, stated the parties are confident they can secure a majority in parliament to speed up nuclear projects.
The report, released this week, outlines potential pathways for Norway to integrate nuclear energy into its power mix. It highlights both small modular reactors and traditional nuclear plants as viable options. Wara emphasized that the current government’s cautious approach is unnecessary and that Norway should adopt a more aggressive timeline.
KrF energy policy leader Hans Inge Myrvold echoed this stance, arguing that nuclear energy could provide stable baseload power as Norway transitions away from fossil fuels. He pointed to neighboring Sweden and Finland as examples where nuclear has played a key role in energy security.
Opposition to nuclear energy remains, particularly from environmental groups and some political factions. They cite safety concerns and the potential for high costs as major drawbacks. However, Wara dismissed these arguments, stating that modern nuclear technology has improved safety standards significantly.
The government has yet to respond formally to the report. A decision on whether to accelerate nuclear projects is expected within the next six months.
