Norway’s armed forces tested smartphone-based communication systems during the Cold Response 2026 exercise. The trial involved devices running a solution developed jointly with civilian tech firms. Military personnel used the phones to coordinate operations in Arctic conditions.
The smartphone solution integrates commercial off-the-shelf hardware with custom software. It was tested under real-world conditions to assess reliability in extreme cold. Norwegian Defence Research Establishment oversaw the technical evaluation.
Civilian partners provided secure data links and encrypted messaging for the trial. These features were critical for maintaining communication when traditional military radios faced interference. The exercise included units from NATO allies, who also participated in the smartphone testing.
Defence officials confirmed the pilot program met initial performance targets. Feedback from soldiers will guide further development before wider deployment. The trial marks Norway’s first large-scale use of civilian smartphone technology in a military exercise of this scale.
Cold Response is held every two years in Northern Norway. The 2026 edition included over 30,000 troops from 27 nations. Smartphone integration reflects a shift toward using commercial technology in military operations.
