Last year insurance fraud in Norway rose by 12 percent compared to 2024, according to figures released by the national insurer Fremtind. The company confirmed it detected fraud totaling 175 million kroner in 2025 alone. Among the cases were several attempts to submit AI-generated images as evidence of damage.
One recent claim involved a customer who attached a photo of broken glasses to support a damage report. Inspectors quickly identified the image as synthetic. The glasses displayed three stems instead of the usual two, a detail impossible in a real pair. Therese Hofstad-Nielsen, damage prevention manager at Fremtind, said AI-generated documentation is becoming a common tactic in fraud cases.
Fremtind says it reports every detected fraud attempt to police. The company hopes this strict policy will deter others. Penalties for insurance fraud can include fines and imprisonment, even when the amounts involved are small. Most fraud cases handled by Fremtind involve contents, travel and motor insurance.
Fraud attempts span all age groups, though men are overrepresented. The trend shows no sign of slowing, as AI tools become easier to use and harder to detect.
