Finland’s defense ministry announced a major expansion of its artillery capabilities on Friday, confirming the acquisition of 112 K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers for 6.1 billion Norwegian kroner. The deal brings Finland’s total K9 artillery systems to over 200, making it one of the largest operators of the South Korean-made platform in Europe.
The K9 Thunder is an 155mm tracked howitzer known for its mobility and rapid firepower. Finland already operates the system under a previous contract signed in 2017, which included technology transfer and local production agreements. The new purchase was finalized through the Norwegian defense procurement agency, Forsvarsmateriell, which has also supplied the system to Norway and Poland.
Defense analysts note the K9’s performance in Ukraine has reinforced its reputation as a reliable long-range artillery platform. The system can fire up to four rounds per minute and has a range exceeding 40 kilometers with standard ammunition. Finland plans to integrate the new units into its mechanized brigades, replacing older towed artillery pieces.
The acquisition aligns with Finland’s broader military modernization following its 2022 NATO accession. The country has prioritized artillery capacity to counter potential threats along its 1,300-kilometer border with Russia. The K9’s deployment will complement Finland’s existing K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers and Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks.
Total cost for the program, including training and spare parts, reaches 6.1 billion kroner. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2026 and conclude by 2030, with final assembly taking place at Patria’s facilities in Finland.
