Era has raised $11 million in a new funding round to build a software platform for AI-powered gadgets. The company believes future AI hardware will take many shapes beyond smartphones, including smart glasses, wearable rings, and pendant-style devices. This investment will support the development of a unified system to run AI applications across these diverse form factors.
The funding round was led by Sequoia Capital with participation from other investors. Era’s platform aims to provide developers with tools to create applications for small, low-power devices. These gadgets typically rely on cloud-based AI but struggle with latency and connectivity issues. Era’s software could reduce dependency on constant internet access by processing some tasks locally.
The company’s CEO stated that current AI hardware remains fragmented, with no dominant design emerging. Era’s approach focuses on flexibility, allowing the same AI models to run efficiently on devices ranging from earbuds to wristwatches. This could accelerate adoption of wearable AI technology in consumer markets.
Industry analysts note that AI wearables are still in early stages. While companies like Apple and Google have experimented with smartwatches and glasses, no single platform has unified development across all form factors. Era’s software could fill this gap if it gains developer support.
The $11 million will also fund hiring for engineering and partnerships with hardware manufacturers. Era plans to release a beta version of its platform later this year.
