Free users on Duolingo can now access advanced language courses previously locked behind a subscription. The change affects all free-tier accounts starting April 22, 2026. Advanced modules include business French, medical Spanish, and technical German for levels B2 and above.
The update follows a six-month pilot in five European markets. During the trial, free users completed advanced lessons at rates comparable to paid subscribers. Duolingo’s data shows 78 percent of these users practiced daily, with an average session lasting 14 minutes.
Previously, only Super Duolingo members could unlock advanced content. Free users faced limitations such as restricted lesson depth and delayed skill assessments. Now, all users receive the same advanced exercises, though ad-supported ads remain on the free tier.
Duolingo’s CEO announced the shift in a company blog post. He cited user demand and internal studies showing advanced learners preferred free access over paid upgrades. The move could pressure competitors like Babbel and Rosetta Stone to adjust their pricing models.
The change does not affect Duolingo English Test fees, which remain separate. Free users will see new advanced courses rolling out weekly over the next three months.
