San Francisco — Google has added Skills in Chrome, an AI-powered tool, to its desktop browser to help users automate repetitive tasks across open tabs. The feature, announced on the official Chrome blog, integrates directly with Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, and is designed to simplify workflows by processing data from multiple web pages simultaneously.
Users can access Skills by typing a forward slash (/) in the Gemini chat interface. The tool offers several predefined functions, including comparing products, analyzing nutritional information, and summarizing documents. For example, it can generate side-by-side comparisons of items across open tabs or calculate calories in a recipe pulled from a webpage. Google also allows users to create and save custom instructions for repeated use.
The feature is currently limited to English-language interfaces and requires enabling the Gemini sidebar in Chrome. Google prioritized English users during the initial rollout, though additional languages may follow. The tool is part of a broader push to embed AI assistance directly into browsing workflows.
Skills is available now on Chrome’s desktop version. Google did not specify a timeline for expanding language support or additional features beyond the initial release.
