Google has released Chrome 124 with two new features designed to improve tab management and reading experience. The update adds vertical tabs and a redesigned Reading Mode to reduce clutter in the browser interface. These changes aim to help users with many open tabs and long-form content.
The vertical tabs feature arranges browser tabs vertically along the left side of the window instead of the traditional horizontal layout. This allows users to see more tab names at once and reduces the need for scrolling. Google states this addresses feedback from users who frequently work with dozens of tabs simultaneously.
The updated Reading Mode removes ads, sidebars, and other distractions to present articles in a cleaner format. It now supports more websites and includes adjustable font sizes and background colors. Google notes this helps readers focus on content without visual clutter.
Chrome 124 is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux starting today. The company says these features were developed based on user feedback collected over the past year. The update also includes performance improvements and security patches.
Users can enable vertical tabs through the browser settings under "Appearance". Reading Mode can be activated by clicking the address bar icon when visiting supported pages. Google plans to expand both features to mobile versions of Chrome in future updates.
