Business leaders in northern Norway are warning of severe consequences after Statnett announced a freeze on new grid capacity reservations in the region. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from industry groups, including NHO and Sjømat Norge, which represent thousands of companies. They argue the move threatens economic growth and job creation in an area already facing infrastructure challenges.
Statnett, the state-owned grid operator, cited technical and regulatory constraints as reasons for the halt. The company said existing capacity is sufficient for current needs but acknowledged concerns about future demand. However, business groups reject this explanation, pointing to projects already delayed due to insufficient grid access. The Finnmark and Troms regions, rich in energy-intensive industries, are particularly at risk.
NHO’s regional director accused Statnett of failing to coordinate with local industries before implementing the freeze. Sjømat Norge, which represents seafood companies, warned that power shortages could disrupt production lines critical to Norway’s export economy. Both groups now demand immediate political intervention to reverse the decision.
Political figures from northern Norway have also voiced support for the business groups. A local MP called the freeze a direct threat to the region’s development. Statnett has not yet responded to requests for further clarification on when or if the reservations might resume.
