Norway’s BankID authentication system faces potential downgrade to the second-highest security level. The Norwegian National Security Authority (NSM) warns this could disrupt access to key digital services used by police, healthcare, and other public agencies.
The issue stems from a recent audit that identified vulnerabilities in BankID’s infrastructure. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether these flaws pose an immediate threat. Still, the possibility of a downgrade has triggered contingency plans across government departments.
BankID is Norway’s dominant digital ID solution, relied upon by over 4 million users for banking, tax filings, and public sector logins. A security downgrade would force agencies to switch to less convenient alternatives, slowing down services that depend on instant verification.
The Norwegian Data Protection Authority is reviewing the audit findings. Its decision will determine whether BankID retains its current security classification or faces restrictions. A final ruling is expected within weeks.
Meanwhile, police and healthcare providers are testing backup systems. The Norwegian Police Directorate states it has plans to maintain operations even if BankID access is limited. Healthcare officials confirm similar preparations are underway to avoid disruptions in patient data access.
