Apple will introduce new artificial intelligence features in the iOS 27 update for the Photos app, enabling users to edit images directly on their devices. The tools—Extend, Enhance, and Reframe—are powered by Apple Intelligence and aim to compete with similar offerings from Google and Samsung. These functions allow automatic expansion of image edges, quality improvement, and repositioning of subjects without manual cropping. The update is scheduled for release this fall, though some features may be delayed if internal testing reveals quality issues.
The new AI tools integrate with the existing Photos app, eliminating the need for third-party editing software. Extend automatically fills in missing parts of an image when expanding its canvas, while Enhance sharpens details and adjusts lighting. Reframe uses AI to reposition subjects within a frame, maintaining composition after resizing. These features rely on on-device processing to ensure privacy, a key selling point for Apple users concerned about cloud-based editing.
Apple has not yet confirmed which iPhone models will support the new AI tools. However, the company states that Apple Intelligence will be available on devices with the A15 Bionic chip or later. The update is part of Apple’s broader push to integrate AI across its ecosystem, following the introduction of similar tools in iOS 26.
Internal testing is ongoing, with some features still in development. Apple has not specified which tools might be delayed, but sources indicate that Enhance and Reframe are furthest along. The company plans to finalize the features before the public release in September 2026.
