The Pentagon in March classified Anthropic as a supply-chain risk under a federal law meant to protect military technology from foreign interference. Yet the artificial intelligence company has continued discussions with senior officials in the Trump administration about potential collaborations.
A person familiar with the matter said Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei met last week with officials from the Department of Defense and the Office of Management and Budget. The talks focused on how the company’s AI models could support government operations, including cybersecurity and logistics planning.
The Pentagon’s designation means Anthropic’s cloud providers and hardware suppliers are now subject to stricter scrutiny. The company relies heavily on Amazon Web Services for training its models, a relationship that could face additional federal review.
Anthropic has previously distanced itself from the Biden administration’s AI policies, which emphasized strict oversight and transparency. Under Trump, the regulatory environment appears more open to industry input, creating an opportunity for companies like Anthropic to shape policy directly.
The company has not commented publicly on the meetings or the Pentagon’s decision. A spokesperson for the Department of Defense declined to discuss ongoing conversations with private firms.
