Amazon is set to invest up to 270 billion Norwegian kroner in AI startup Anthropic, deepening a partnership that also requires Anthropic to spend over 1000 billion kroner on Amazon Web Services technology. The deal secures Amazon’s access to massive computing power through AWS, including Trainium chips and capacity for up to 5 gigawatts for future AI models.
The agreement follows Amazon’s earlier $4 billion investment in Anthropic last year, marking a clear escalation in the tech giant’s push to compete in the AI infrastructure space. AWS will provide the backbone for Anthropic’s next-generation models, ensuring access to high-performance hardware optimized for large-scale training.
Analysts say the move strengthens Amazon’s position against rivals like Microsoft and Google, which have also made major AI investments. The deal also includes a commitment from Anthropic to deploy its models on AWS, locking in long-term demand for Amazon’s cloud services.
The investment comes as AI demand surges, pushing cloud providers to expand capacity rapidly. Amazon’s Trainium processors, designed specifically for AI workloads, will play a central role in the collaboration. The company has not disclosed when the full investment will be deployed, but the scale suggests a multi-year commitment to infrastructure expansion.
For Norway, the deal highlights the growing role of its energy resources in supporting global AI development, as data centers in the region rely on renewable power to meet rising demand.
