Airbnb is preparing to incorporate advanced AI capabilities powered by large language models (LLMs) into its platform, aiming to improve user experience in searching listings, trip planning, and property management. CEO Brian Chesky announced during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call that Airbnb is developing an AI-native experience designed to better understand users and assist guests throughout their trips while helping hosts manage their businesses more effectively. Currently, Airbnb offers an LLM-based customer service chatbot and some personalized communication features. The company is now testing a new AI search function that allows users to ask natural language questions about properties and locations. This feature is expected to evolve into a more comprehensive, intuitive search tool extending across the entire trip experience. Chesky emphasized that while AI search is currently available to a limited user base, the company is experimenting with making it more conversational and integrated into broader trip planning. He also indicated that sponsored listings could be introduced in the future once the user experience is refined. Airbnb’s new CTO, Ahmad Al-Dahle, formerly of Meta’s Llama project, will lead efforts to leverage Airbnb’s extensive identity and review data for AI enhancements. The company reported that its AI-powered support bot, launched last year in North America, now resolves about one-third of customer issues without human intervention. Plans are underway to expand the bot’s capabilities to voice support and additional languages. Internally, Airbnb aims for 100% of its engineers to use AI tools, up from the current 80%. Financially, Airbnb reported fourth-quarter revenue of $2.78 billion, a 12% increase year-over-year.
